S.H. Raza, Gestation II, 2024

Gestation, painted in 1989, marks a significant period in S.H. Raza's artistic journey. This era is considered the pinnacle of his creative vision, representing a profound return to his Indian roots after decades of exploration across the world. Having lived in France for over five decades, Raza enriched his artistic horizons with the avant-garde movements of Europe and the United States, yet his heart remained tethered to the vibrant culture of India.

This monumental painting is a symphony of colors and forms, where Raza melds the inverted chevron pattern—a symbolic representation of trees—with the warm, earthy palette. His fascination with pure geometry and color symbolism is evident, as he once said:
“I have interpreted the universe in terms of five primary colours: black, white, red, blue, and yellow. A total chromatic expression can be achieved by mixing primary colours with other secondary colours, such as greens, browns, and ochres. From there you can move to a great austerity of colours till you come to a supreme purity of form." - S.H. Raza

    Significance of 'Bindu'

While Raza’s geometric works might visually echo the abstract paintings of his American contemporaries, they delve into a deeper, spiritual realm. The circle, or Bindu, is not just a graphic element but a powerful symbol of concentrated energy. It becomes the focal point around which Raza structures his canvases, drawing on ancient meditative aids such as yantras and mandalas.

As Ashok Vajpayee, Director of The Raza Foundation aptly puts it:

"These embroidered masterpieces showcase the vibrant interplay of colors and geometric motifs, where Raza's black Bindu symbolizes creation and his profound connection to the cosmos and nature."

The selected works of Raza are embroidered by Milaaya Art with exceptionally skilled craftspersons who not only showcase the richness of embroidery as an art form but also the remarkable tradition and skills from India. These include Aari and Zardozi techniques, Satin stitch, Phulkari, Kutch embroidery, Kantha stitch, and French Knots among others. This allows viewers to experience the deep interconnection and interdependence on the world we inhabit, encouraging contemplation through the intertwined, complex web of embroideries. Each stitch is meticulously placed to ensure that when viewed side by side, the embroidered piece feels as if the painting has come to life, enriched by the raised dimensions of embroidery.

At Milaaya Art, we have undertaken the intricate process of translating Raza's Gestation into a hand-embroidered masterpiece. Colored thread yarns are twisted together and used in the embroidery to mimic the shading of brushstrokes in this masterpiece.

The various textures created with cotton and silk threads create a visual delight, making the piece come to life with the raised dimensions of embroidery. This transformation from canvas to thread is not just about replication; it’s about breathing new life into a work of art, creating a tactile experience that honors Raza’s legacy while inviting collectors to explore the depth and texture of his vision.

    Gestation II: Embroidered Mastery

A Detailed Look at the Intricate Embroidery of Raza's Vision
At the core of Raza's paintings lies a deep connection to nature, particularly the lush landscapes of Madhya Pradesh where he was born. Gestation is a testament to this connection, even if abstract in form. The son of a forest ranger, Raza was deeply influenced by the natural beauty of the Narmada River valley. This painting, created in 1989, radiates an inherent rhythm and elegance, capturing the essence of the Indian landscape while offering a visual map for meditative contemplation.
