Shaurya Kumar is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist whose works delve into themes of memory, impermanence, and the interplay between destruction and reconstruction. Born in 1980 in India, Kumar holds an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a postgraduate diploma in Museology from the National Museum Institute in New Delhi. He is also a graduate of the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai.
Kumar's art spans diverse media, including painting, sculpture, and installation, often characterized by intricate detailing and a deep engagement with materiality. His works frequently explore the fragility of cultural heritage, inspired by his extensive research into the loss of historical artifacts and traditional craftsmanship. By juxtaposing traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics, Kumar creates thought-provoking pieces that question the permanence of human endeavors.
His work has been showcased in several international exhibitions, including at the Aicon Gallery in New York, the Chicago Cultural Center, and the Devi Art Foundation in India. Kumar also serves as the Chair of the Department of Fiber and Material Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he mentors the next generation of artists.
