This scroll from Sheikh’s Terrain: Carrying Across, Leaving Behind series, titled Afterwards, captures the resilience of women rebuilding their lives after plunder and destruction. Drawing from historical Persian and Turkish art, the scene combines intricate embroidery techniques with painterly effects, using mixed thread yarns for shading, French knots for textured trees, and thicker threads for dimensional figures.

This scroll from Sheikh’s Terrain: Carrying Across, Leaving Behind series is titled Afterwards and depicts the process of recovery after plunder and destruction with women carrying on with their daily lives while battling calamities and yet continuing to play their part in the ecosystem. The woman lighting her cooking fire is a reference from a 16th century Persian painting and the plundering demons in the sky refer to a 12th century work by a Turkish artist .

The painterly effect and the shading in the background is replicated by mixing two thread yarns and fine techniques that blend. The trees are embroidered with French knots to give them texture, and the figures are stitched with slightly thicker threads to add dimension. This artwork took approximately 7000 hours of handwork to be completed.
